Tarot Methodology

How the 78-card deck, random draws, reversals, daily card and editorial yes-or-no leanings work on this site.

The complete deck

The data contains 78 unique cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles each contain Ace through Ten, Page, Knight, Queen and King. Strength is numbered VIII and Justice XI in this ordering. The visual deck uses an original celestial design with card names and simple typographic symbols; it is not a scanned commercial deck.

Random selection

Ordinary tools use crypto.getRandomValues in your browser. Rejection sampling avoids the small bias that can come from dividing an unrestricted integer into uneven groups. A one-card draw samples the selected deck; each subsequent reading starts again from the complete selected pool. Three-card readings and the six-position visual pull sample without replacement within that reading. Secure randomness is a technical choice, not a claim of mystical accuracy.

Orientations

When enabled, reversal is a separate balanced random choice for each card. With reversals disabled, every result is upright. We show orientation in text instead of requiring visitors to recognize rotated artwork. Reversed content may describe a blocked, excessive, inward or changing expression of a theme.

Daily-card persistence

The Daily Card generates an anonymous random seed and stores it in localStorage in this browser. A deterministic hash of that seed and the local YYYY-MM-DD date determines the card and orientation. Reloading within the same local day preserves the result. Different dates can repeat a card by chance. Clearing storage, changing browser or changing the local date can change the result. If storage is blocked, a memory-only seed works while the page stays open, and the interface discloses that refresh may change it.

Yes-or-no conventions

Every card has an upright editorial leaning: Yes, Leaning Yes, Maybe, Leaning No or No. A reversal moves the leaning one step toward caution, with No remaining No. This is our explicitly chosen convention, not a universal tarot rule. The explanation follows symbolism rather than a probability model and cannot guarantee an outcome.

Topic-specific readings

General, Love, Career and Personal Growth perspectives use prepared card text. Love modes add a relevant reflection frame. Three-card positions guide the reading of each card without making claims about future facts or another person’s private thoughts. A typed question is not sent to an AI, psychic service or analytics platform.

Limitations and safeguards

A keyword-based check recognizes some clearly high-stakes questions and offers a non-decision-making reflection instead. It is not a complete safety classifier and can miss phrases or languages. All interpretations are therefore written without definitive medical, legal, financial or emergency predictions regardless of the check. Tarot has no established ability to determine future facts.
